Oh and Paradise Sweets, home of coffee and ice cream. This is where you can find one of my favorites, Paradise Grille, along with The Hurricane and the Brass Monkey. The area around 10 th – 8 th Ave is really the predominant shopping and restaurant area of Pass-A-Grille. On holidays and some weekends you may find some vendors set up in the patio are at Paradise Grille The outdoor (and only) dining area at Paradise Grille Sand Dunes operates lounge chair rentals, umbrellas rentals and on calm days, SUPs. Sand Dunes rentals sets up the yellow umbrellas early on July 4th, awaiting the throngs of sun-seekers

There are only a handful of free parking spaces around, so bring a credit card to pay by the space at the machines provided. You’ll find the beach gets a little more crowded as you reach Historic Pass-A-Grille, down around 10 th Ave. There is plenty of parking and ample beach walkovers all the way to the end. Turn left and head south and the Gulf will be on your right the entire way. If you turn right when you see the sea Critters restaurant, you’ll dead end at Gulf Way. Grab your favorite flotation device and insert yourself here And you begin to sense the Gulf on your right. You can see the water on the left (Little McPherson Bayou and then Pass-A-Grille channel).
No more mid-rise or high-rise hotels or condos, only one traffic light, the traffic slows and you begin to realize that you are on the way to someplace special.Įven with the mutli-story homes that have been replacing the small bungalows in recent years, there is just a feeling of more openness.
Little McPherson Bayou is on your left and the massive Gulf of Mexico is on your right. Or more accurately, at the southernmost tip of St Pete Beach.Īs you pass The Don CeSar, Gulf Blvd gives way to Pass A Grille Way, and the road becomes a palm-lined, single-lane-each-direction road. Petersburg Beach in 1957 and in 1989 a section of Pass-A-Grille was declared a National Historic District.Pass-a-grille is a little haven in the middle of bustling St Pete Beach.
The town of Pass-A-Grille Beach was incorporated into the city of St. Zephaniah Phillips, the first homesteader settled here in 1886 and by the turn of the Century Pass-A-Grille had it’s first hotel and a ferry boat service from what is now Gulfport. In 1857, John Gomez self styled ‘last of the pirates’, began bringing excursionists here from Tampa which gave this area the distinction of perhaps being the oldest resort on Central Florida’s West Coast. According to legend, it is thought that Pass-A-Grille derives it’s name from the French Passe aux Grilleurs. Afterwards, the island was used as a camp ground for fisherman to obtain fresh water and to grill their catch. This area was first visited by Europeans in 1528 when the Spanish Explorer, Panfilo de Narvaez anchored off Pass-A-Grille pass. The last group of Native Americans to settle in the Pinellas County area were the Tocobagas around 1,000 – 1,700 AD. For 10,000 years, Indians hunted the prairies and fished the waters of what later became Pass-A-Grille.
